Cultivating a strong team culture

Everyone who’s in business wants a cohesive team, where everybody loves coming to work and they all get along - like a family.

And if you want a team culture like that - you need to cultivate it.

As the saying goes “the grass is greener where you water it” - so you need to put time, energy and a lot of love into your team to build a strong team culture.

At Open Space Healing, what we’ve created is magical.

It’s something that every client who walks through the door...takes the time to tell us that they feel better when they walk into the space and that they love everyone in our team.

That doesn’t happen by accident. In fact we’ve very systematically put things in place to create that strong team culture.

So if you want to cultivate a strong team culture too - we’re going to share exactly what we did in our business so you can create the same.

Things You’ll Learn in This Episode of Hustle With Heart:

  • Why having a strong team culture is GOLD when it comes to having a business that flows with ease and serves your customers

  • How the small things make a BIG impact and can help you build a business family

  • How to bring every team member together to strive towards a common goal

  • The exact process we used to create our cultural words

Step 1 - Team Outings

As humans, we’re social creatures. And like having a date night with your significant other - you need to have regular social events for your team to connect.

It doesn’t have to be big, and you can also ask them what they would like to do together so that they can bond.

This helps to build connection through experiences

Step 2 - Infuse Love Rituals into Every Day

Don’t just wait for the big team events before you actually appreciate and acknowledge your team.

And weave into every day.

This could look like:

  • Knowing each other's love language (words of affirmations, acts of service etc) and doing something nice for them or helping them out’

  • Encourage the team to share and celebrate the little wins

  • Celebrate team birthdays

  • Love jars

When overheads are high, it’s easy to cut these things...but they should never be cut because the little things are EVERYTHING. These are the glue that holds your business together.

Investing in these rituals and your culture of your business, is going to return a much greater investment down the track. It means that you're going to have team members who stay with you a lot longer. Instead of having that high turnover and having to train new people all the time.

Step 3 - Create cultural words + enlist the team

Cultural words are what you stand for as a business and team.

For example: SPARK JOY, ACCESSIBLE SERVICE, 5% ABOVE + BEYOND

And then all of the little things that we have in place in the business - the policies, procedures, etc - we put under one of the cultural words.

This means that every team member knows why we do something that we do, there isn't any policy or any procedure that we do that isn't in alignment with our cultural words.

And enlist your team in this process.

We brought the team together - wrote down everything we do that makes the biz what it is - highlighted common themes and gave those themes a name.

All of your key processes and systems should fit under one of your cultural words.

So if you want to do this with your team (or even by yourself), write down all the little bits and pieces that you do, and then start fleshing out what word is associated with this. A good place to start is to come up with around 9 words for your business.

Step 4 - Recruit the right people

Recruit the right people that FIT the business culture. That’s why a good understanding of the culture that you want to cultivate in your business is important.

Because if you don't, then when you're recruiting, you can't match the candidates with your business culture.

Another element of this is to be long to hire, quick to fire. You can teach the ins and outs of your business but you’ll never be able to change WHO someone is (their personality, their values etcs).

When you interview candidates, listen out to IF they use your cultural words when explaining who they are and why they want to work with you.

And there you have it!

Building a team culture isn't a one step process. You need to hire the right people, enlist them in your culture, continue to nurture that culture and keep every member of the team accountable to it.
