Nailing Your Niche
When we first started out in business, “nailing our niche” felt overwhelming, like a big job and confusing - It was like everyone else got it except for us.
As chiropractors we can see everyone from infants to the elderly, so we had a fear that if we niched too much then we would limit ourselves.
But the reality is that without a clearly defined niche, you can end up serving no one. If you try to attract everyone you attract no one.
And we learnt that by niching down and being clear on who you’re serving…
You repel the people you don’t want…
And magnetise the people you do.
If you look at many successful businesses it’s very clear to see the types of people they are serving.
For example:
LuLulemon - very clear market. Wealthier demographic, like yoga, fit and healthy. Quality.
“Snickers” - Get some nuts. Clearly targeting the occa male.
They’ve both done this very successfully, and in doing so will attract that type of person.
So if you want to hone in on the people you’re wanting to serve and be magnetic to them - we’re sharing some tips to help you nail your niche.
Things You’ll Learn in This Episode of Hustle With Heart:
Why having a clear defined niche is so important for business success
How to create a clear and defined niche for your business so that you are magnetic to your ideal customer
How to understand the wants and needs of your client or customer so that you can serve them in the best way possible
Create your avatar
Get very, very specific about who you want to attract and create an avatar about this person.
Dive into as much detail as possible.
An easy way to come up with your avatar is to look at the people that you're serving at the moment and pick your favourite clients (we all have them) and then use them as a guide to create your avatar.
Give them a name and write their story
The more detail that you create for that avatar, the better.
The key thing to creating an avatar is that when you’re making a decision in your business, is to always ask yourself the question…
“Would [insert avatar name] like this / would this help them?”
Then you’re creating and growing your business for your ideal client (your avatar), and that will naturally lead to success.
Niche your niche
One you feel like you have a niche or you have a market, try and niche down that niche.
Yes!
If you think it’s specific - take another step and see if you can niche more.
For example if your niche is “small business owners” - there are a lot of them - so get even more specific!
Ask yourself:
What's your special sauce?
What's your point of difference?
What are the types of people that you love to work with?
When you're niching down your niche, you’re creating your unique selling point.
What they say the want vs what they actually want
The next step is to get really deep into what your avatar’s specific needs are.
And we challenge you here to really think about and listen to the things that they’re saying are their problems…
And then read between the lines to uncover the things that they won't necessarily tell you are problems for them.
Some of these things people aren't going to share with you.
But if you start to really understand who it is you're serving, you can really help them in a way that matters.
One of the key ways to get into their heads (and really understand them) is to survey your community. And to continuously survey them
You can do this a number of ways:
In person
Via social media polls and question boxes
Create a survey via platforms such as Survey Monkey and email the survey to you community with an incentive for them to complete it
Remember when you’re surveying your community, make sure that you only listen to the advice of the niche that you're wanting to serve...
Because if you're surveying a community of people that isn't your target market, then they're not going to give you the information that's actually valuable for you (for example your husband!).
Remember your niche can change
And finally, if you're doing this work and it's stressing you out, and you're feeling like you're just not getting it or you don't have clarity...it's okay!
Your niche can (and will) change.
It’ll evolve and grow as your business grows and evolves.
So remember to revisit often.
