Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Being a business owner is like going through the most intense personal development course ever.

Showing up on social media, sharing your knowledge and dealing with criticism - it can be quite stressful at times - and you’ll often experience imposter syndrome.

So in today’s episode we’re sharing more on imposter syndrome and some steps that you can take to overcome it.

Things You’ll Learn in This Episode of Hustle With Heart:

  • What imposter syndrome is and how it could be limiting your life and business

  • Our favourite tips and tricks to help you give imposter syndrome the flick

  • How to identify when your negative self talk is getting in the way of your growth

  • A powerful exercise that will help you gain awareness of your shadow, and heal your inner child so that imposter syndrome no longer sabotages your success.

What is imposter syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is when you doubt your abilities. You may feel like a bit of a fraud and that you’re not enough to share whatever it is you’re sharing.

You’ll find yourself comparing yourself to others in your industry and thinking they’re better than you.

This might lead you to try and go above and beyond for your clients trying to be successful - which then leads to you sacrificing your boundaries and in some instances actually being inauthentic with yourself because you’re trying to be “more”.

As a business owner, you have a very unique skill set that most people don't know about. People don't know what you know, and that makes your perspective really valuable.

And by sharing what's on your heart, you allow others to do the same. So when you're scared and you don't show up, then that means that you're doing a disservice for others because they may not have someone that they can look up to to do the same.

How to overcome imposter syndrome

So now you’re aware of what imposter syndrome looks like, we want to share some actionable steps you can take to overcome it.

1. Share it with a friend or a trusted person

Share your fears with trusted friends. Speak it aloud, don’t let it hide and fester and grow in the shadows.

When spoken it doesn’t seem as big and by sharing it with others you’ll have a cheer squad around you who’ll hype you up and support you through the times where you doubt yourself.

2. Make it about the people you serve

Always make your work about the people you serve because your work is bigger than you.

You can be so in your head and fearful about sharing what you know and thinking about what other people will think, but you need to make it about your community.

It’s important to share what you know with the people that are coming to you for that advice - it’d be selfish to keep it to yourself.

So always keep in mind the bigger picture - the people who you’re serving.

3. Uncover your shadow

Your shadow is the thing that holds you back, keeps you small, and stops you from believing in your own potential.

It’s aspects of yourself that you’ve rejected through pain, shame and programming.

And as soon as you learn to accept and love that aspect of yourself, then life is going to be so much easier for you to navigate.

We have a process that’s a really easy, simple way for you to identify your shadow and to help to process and work through it. Ask yourself...

  • How am I feeling about XYZ? Identify the emotion (fear/self doubt)

  • What am I afraid of?

  • Where did that come from? What are other examples of you feeling this way in your life?

And from there we recommend doing some Mirror Work Exercises (we recommend checking out Lacy Phillips).

So essentially to do this exercise, all of the shadows that you just identified as part of your shadow, what you need to do is stand in front of the mirror, and actually say I am, and whatever that is, while looking at yourself in the mirror. Repeat this until it doesn't have any charge for you. Be creative and go deep.

And that’s what has made us successful. Not only have we implemented the strategies and the techniques in business, but we've also traversed our internal worlds, and really understood some of our own wounding and how that's showing up in self sabotaging behaviours in business and help to heal that so that we can grow quite quickly.

4. Just Do It

Just do the thing!

The course, the workshop...whatever it is!

Everyone starts somewhere and the longer you wait, the longer you are holding back your growth.

It doesn't need to be big jumps all at one time - but start small.

And then you're flexing that muscle and slowly you get more and more confident and you start to get feedback that's positive, and you trust yourself more and more until eventually you're doing that big scary thing that you never thought you were going to do.

Like anything in life, it's training that muscle and getting it really strong. And to do that you have to actually just do it.

Flex that muscle, start with something small and grow bigger.

And there you have it - our top 5 tips to give imposter syndrome the flick.
